Pet Allergies: Common Symptoms, Causes, and Tips for Relief

We all love to spoil our pets—whether it’s with long walks, new toys, extra cuddles, favourite treats, or even a photoshoot to show them off.

Allergies to animals are the second most common source of indoor allergens in the UK and can make other allergies worse. It’s not the fur itself that triggers allergies, but rather proteins found in saliva, urine, and dead skin debris. Fur can also carry airborne allergens like pollen, dust mites, and mould, which can cause symptoms in people with hayfever, asthma or eczema.

Common Pet Allergy Symptoms

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Itchy skin rash

Are Hypoallergenic Pets a Myth?

Currently, there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog or cat. However, the benefits of pet ownership may outweigh the discomfort of allergies. Studies suggest that having a pet can provide various health benefits, such as reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, increasing social interactions, and fulfilling the human need to nurture.

How to Reduce Exposure to Pet Allergens

  • Keeping your pet out of the bedroom can help reduce exposure to the allergens they produce.
  • Take an antihistamine when visiting someone with pets.
  • Get your pets their own cosy bedding to discourage them from sleeping on the bed or furniture, and don’t forget to wash pet bedding regularly on a hot wash.
  • Avoid petting animals when you’re out and about and remember to wash your hands if you can’t resist a quick stroke.
  • Most dogs love a bath, and washing regularly can help remove some of the allergens.
